YMCA of Greater Michiana Celebrates Women’s Leadership
This Women’s History Month, the YMCA of Greater Michiana is proud to celebrate the impact of two extraordinary leaders—Denise Peters and Jill Haboush—whose work has strengthened programs and empowered the local community. Their journeys reflect the growing influence of women in leadership and the power of the Y to create meaningful opportunities for connection and growth.
Perseverance and the Power of Mentorship
Denise Peters’ journey with the Y began more than four decades ago when she volunteered while working as a teacher and coach. Her connection with the Y deepened as she saw how the organization supported local families and youth programs.
Her career took a turn when she stepped away from teaching to care for a parent. That’s when the Y became more than just a place to volunteer—it became a professional home. Denise started in member services and community engagement, using her background in fitness and coaching to create successful programs.
“I love what the Y does. I love education. I love kids. I love people. It was just a natural fit,” Denise says.
Her leadership abilities became undeniable as the YMCA of Greater Michiana expanded to include the Niles-Buchanan YMCA, Benton Harbor-St. Joseph, YMCA O’Brien Center, and Downtown South Bend YMCA. When Mark Weber, the Y’s then-interim CEO, encouraged her to take on an executive role, she hesitated.
“I told Mark I’m not a CEO person—I’m a program person,” Denise recalls. “But he recognized my passion for the people and the programming. He reminded me that leadership at the Y isn’t about titles; it’s about making an impact.”
As Chief Operating Officer, Denise helped grow Summer My Way, a program that started with Niles Community Schools and now includes over 30 community partners. Each summer, hundreds of kids gain access to education, recreation, meals, and life skills through the program.
“It’s about connecting community resources in a way that amplifies their impact,” Denise explains. “When organizations work together, we can do something big rather than each doing something small.”
Pioneering Development Strategy
Jill Haboush’s path to leadership was less conventional—but no less impactful. After returning to Southwest Michigan from Detroit, Jill joined the Y as a member. One day, after a workout, she saw Mark Weber and asked if they were hiring. That bold move launched her into a new career.
Jill’s background in business and finance helped her transition into development work. When she started part-time, the Y had no formal fundraising team. Jill drew on her experience in PTA fundraising to establish partnerships and engage local businesses.
“The YMCA gave me the opportunity to re-enter the workforce in a way that felt meaningful,” Jill says.
Under her leadership, the Y’s development program has grown significantly. Today, it includes five major events—like the Greatest Chefs of Michiana—as well as annual campaigns, capital initiatives, and endowment growth.
“There’s always a new initiative needing support—a renovation project, an expanded youth program, or emergency funding needs,” Jill says. “The key is staying organized, trusting our team, and maintaining strong community relationships.”
Her work has not only increased financial support for the Y but also deepened connections with the local business community.
“My children grew up in these programs,” she says. “I’ve watched them volunteer and mentor others. Seeing their compassion and leadership grow has been incredibly rewarding.”
Leading the Way Forward
Denise and Jill’s leadership reflects the core mission of the Y—empowering individuals and creating spaces where everyone feels valued.
“Being a leader means lifting others up,” Denise says. “I’ve had incredible mentors along the way, and now, I strive to be that person for others.”
Jill echoes that sentiment. “Leadership isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about creating an environment where others can thrive,” she says.
YMCA of Greater Michiana CEO Mark Weber believes Denise and Jill’s leadership reflects the strength of the organization. “They each bring unique strengths to their roles—empathy, collaboration, resilience. They understand the bigger picture but also pay attention to the details that make a difference. That’s what makes the Y so special.”
Both Denise and Jill hope their journeys inspire the next generation of female leaders.
“Surround yourself with people who uplift you and challenge you,” Jill advises. “And never stop learning—leadership is a continuous journey.”
Denise adds, “Be true to who you are. Leadership isn’t about fitting a mold; it’s about bringing your unique strengths to the table and leading with heart.”
Their stories serve as a powerful reminder of the impact that strong leadership and community collaboration have on individuals and families. The YMCA of Greater Michiana remains a beacon of opportunity, empowering women and all members of the community to reach their full potential.
